On July 6, 2022, the Martinez City Council adopted a Public Art Policy to establish uniform guidelines and procedures through which the City can commission, consider, approve, or reject publicly accessible visual art on public property and also accept or reject gifted artwork.  The Policy also clarifies that all Public Art on City-owned or controlled property constitutes government speech/property.

The Public Art Policy was adopted following several meetings of the Parks, Recreation, Marina and Cultural Commission (PRMCC) and its Cultural and Arts Subcommittee, and was also reviewed and recommended for approval by the City’s Anti-Racism, Pro Equity and Inclusion (ARDPIE) Task Force.

The City has completed an online application form to receive proposals for public art installations.  This online form is preferred for public art applications.  The City has also created a fillable PDF application format available to receive applications and hardcopy application forms are available upon request with the City’s Recreation Division.
