For the last decade, cities have been the leading force against climate change. Having a localized lens of responsibility allows local governments to tailor climate solutions to the distinct needs of their communities. In June 2009, the City became one of the first in Contra Costa County to put this idea into action.
After California passed AB 32 in 2006, establishing a statewide goal of reducing greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, Martinez adopted a Climate Action Plan ("CAP") to help the state meet this ambitious target. CAPs outline specific strategies to reduce GHGs, conserve energy and other natural resources, and prepare the community for potential climate change impacts.
The Martinez CAP identifies four key sectors - transportation, energy, solid waste, and water - that must be addressed to protect our community. To learn about the City's CAP implementation accomplishments, check out our annual Climate Action Plan Recap below.
